Can I Repair A Stripped Gas Valve On A Water Heater?

When replacing my leaking gas line I discovered another leak coming from the water unit itself. The original coupler was inserted awkward and upon removing it, I discovered the thread was damaged at the unit. I’ve tried thread tape but the leak is a little to severe for that…..any ideas?
Also, is the part (unit with the dial and pilot knob) replacable?

If you have the skills, time, tools, and access, you may be able to re-thread it yourself. You may need a plumber and decide this is the right way to go after adding up all the pieces you need to fix it yourself.
If a major brand water heater, you might be able to find the replacement part. Sears has everything online, only trouble is that some things are so old that they might not stock the part anymore. Otherwise, try a plumbing supply, not just the hardware store.
