Forgot Salt In Water Softener,now There Is Mold, What Do I Do?

OMG, I forgot to put salt in my water softener. Now I just opened the salt tank & saw the mold in there. What can I do to clean it out? Please help if you have any advice. I am thinking of using a shop vacuum to suck all the water & mold out, cleaning it out with soap, & then putting salt in after. Is this even a good idea?

    How much mold is there? Turn the bypass valve so none of the cleaners will get into your pipes. If there is enough to vacuum out get out what you can. Use bleach, just spray it in there 10:1 concentration is plenty, it will kill all of the mold. Suck all of that water out too. Once it looks clean you will probably need to pour some undilluted bleach in the mixing reservoir. Not where you put the salt, the other tube that probably has a cap on it, where the water runs into when it recharges. Then set it to recharge now and let that bleach solution run into the softener itself, the cylinder that looks like an air tank. If you still have the documentation that came with the softener it will also tell you how to disinfect your softener and how much bleach to run in the recharge cycle. Once it is clean and rinsed out, fill it with salt and close the bypass valve. I wouldn’t use soap, you might never get it all out and you’ll get suds from your inside tap water.
