Hot Water Heater Leaking? Is This An Expensive Problem?
Hi, since about a week ago there has been a puddle around the hot water heater. Is this something I can fix myself or should I call a plumber? I couldn’t tell where it was coming from, but I pulled out this orange plug and water came gushing out so I put it back in.. i’m no handy (wo)man..
But anyways.. how much does something like this cost to fix?
Thanks!

Water heaters have a glass liner for insulation, just like a thermos bottle. In time they will crack, causing a leak. Sorry to tell you but it will need to be replaced. If you are a serious do-it -yourselfer with plumbing skills, you can replace it yourself. Can you measure, cut, and solder copper pipe? If not you should call in a pro. Be prepared to spend $250 to $300 for the tank plus a little more for any extra materials needed. A plumber may charge $100 -$200 for the installation.

You will porbably need to replace your water heater. I would say a regular water heater runs from $300 and up.
I don’t know if you are able to install it yourself, but installing will cost you an additional $100.

nobody fixes a hot water tank today,,its cheaper to buy a new one.
But now you need someone to install it for you. Is it electric or gas?
Electric is easier but the gas job just takes a little longer. About 2 hours.

Keep in mind that the leak could be from a corroded tank. If it turns into a major break you will have a very large amount of water to deal with. I would get it replaced ASAP.

i’ve changed alot of tanks….if a pipe on top is not leaking then i do not think your going to find the leak and time to replace the whole thing
