How Do Tankless Water Heater Systems Work?

Are they as good as tank water heaters? What are their advantages and what are their drawbacks? Just curious about this. Thanks

They work by heating the water as it flows through them. There are gas and electric models, so I’m sure they work slightly differently. They are only heating when the water is flowing, which saves energy costs. You never run out of hot water. They are generally more expencive than regular water heaters, and because of their low output you can only do one thing at a time. (IE: You can’t shower and run a dishwasher at the same time)
There are models that allow for 2 major uses at the same time, but the ones i have seen are upwards of a thousand dollars.

They heat on demand rather than heat and store – The boiler senses when water is drawn and starts up the burner.
The advantage is that they don’t waste energy by heating when it is not needed but the flip side of this is that the fastest you can get a supply is their capacity to heat.

I own one and I think it is great. It is capable of handling several applications at the same time. I don’t run out of hot water, and I am not paying to heat water that I don’t use. I had mine installed on the outside of the house and converted the area where the old water heater was into a storage closet. Tankless heaters are more expensive than conventional water heaters initially. However I am told that they last longer so I expect to recoup the cost in my energy savings over the long run.
