I Have Hard Water, And My Water Heater Keeps Getting “jammed” With Lime. Any Alternatives To Water Softeners?
Our town has very hard water and every time they do work on the main, my water heater impeller gets jammed with lime chunks. My repairman has recommended Culligan, but I was wondering if there are any less costly alternatives out there.

I had a problem with sediment clogging my mixing valve. Got a Culligan HF-360 Whole House Water Filter System at Ace for about $45.00. I needed to change the filters every so often but it was cheaper and easier than replacing the mixing valves. You can buy cheaper ones but this has a shut off valve and pressure release which makes changing the filters real easy. I hang the wrench next to the filter along with a new gasket and a spare filter. It will not remove lime in solution but any pieces of lime it will remove. Good Luck!

absolutely, get an inline filter installed. Between the wall and the water heater, install an inline filter ( Wal-Mart ). Make sure that the cut-off valve is on the wall before the filter because every time you are to change the filter you must cut off the water first. Make sure it is installed in the cold water supply line coming into the water heater. Plumber can install one for under 100 bucks in about an hour. Culligan man must be related to your repairman.

An in-line filter will definitely help your water heater, but if your water is calcifying your water heater; it is also calcifying your clothes washer, dishwasher, shower head, faucets and all pipes in your home.
There are definitely less expensive softeners available than Culligan. The quality gap between Culligan products and other brands has narrowed significantly in the past 5 years.
If your on a well and have iron in your water, this will drive up the cost of any water softener.
Other brands to consider: Rainsoft, Fleck, Sears/Kenmore, Kinetico, GE.
Good Luck

I don’t know if this is any help but my water heater has a label at the bottom of the heater near the drain faucet to make sure I drain the water periodically to remove calcium buildup in the tank, if not done, this type of problem could occur.
