If My Water Softener Runs Out Of Salt, Will It Damage The Unit?

I didn’t catch it this time until is was all water in the tank. Does this shorten the life of the resin?

no, it just means you won’t be able to make brine to backwash the softener. You won’t have soft water until you add more salt.
Add more salt tomorrow, you’ll be fine.

The master plumber has my vote for correct answer. No worries, just get some more salt and start the regeneration mode when you fill it.

It just means that your water softener will not do what it is supposed to. But also a water softener that runs for too long without salt can damage the system. By the way did you know that if you install a whole house filter on your main copper line (about $100) it reduces pressure on your softener.
