In A House With Natural Gas, Does The Gas Heat The Water Heater?
I’m closing on a house next week and I’m trying to figure how much it will cost to get utilities turned on. The house is heated with natural gas and I want to know if that’s what heats the water heater? It’s still warm here and will be for awhile so I don’t want to pay to turn it on if its not needed.

The water heater may be either electric or natural gas. This you will have to check. Pay to have the gas turned on. You will have to do it sooner or later. You only pay for the gas used on your bills anyway. If you don’t use the furnace there will be no cost. You may also have a gas range and oven that you will need to use to cook.

More than likely yes the water heater is gas. If there is a 3″-4″diameter pipe coming from top of water heater it is a gas fired water heater. On the other hand if there is just a wire coming out of the top it is electric. Reminder: on a gas fired water heater, you will have to light the pilot once the gas is turned on or you wont have hot water!

Does HW heater have a wire connected to the top or a gas pipe down the side? That would tell you. If you don’t have a separate HW heater, your hot water may come off of a NG boiler with a coil. Home inspection report or the other real estate agent should tell you. Suprised gas co charges to put utility in your name, here we just pay for usage.

Brittany, if your going to live in the house, YES you have to turn it on. The rate charge is only on the thermal units you actually use. While the gas man turns on all the appliances ask about the water heater, I bet it is also gas operated.

99% of the time if the house has natural gas for the heat then the water heater will also be gas. It depends on what kind of pricing the builder got for appliances. It could be electric..

Yes he gas heats you water, but you should trun it on orhave it turned on. But you could also have an electric water heaterand not a gas one.

If it’s a gas water heater it requires gas. Just because the house is heated by a gas furnace doesn’t mean the water heater is too. It may be electric. Which means your gas bill will be cheaper!
