Expense depends on area gas however is many times less expensive or comparable to electric
About only difference between gas and electric is gas has a pilot light that must stay lit. basically it has a thermostat that tells it when it needs to heat water and when it goes below certain temp it lights burner which runs till temperature is reached in tank. of coarse gas does tend to heat water faster than electric so can be less time of cold water if you use what is in tank. and usually less times that occurs.

Gas is generally more efficient than electric. There’s a pilot light (small gas flame that’s always on) or an electric ignition that ignites the gas burner when the heater comes on. The hot exhaust from the burning gas heats up a heat exchanger where the water flows through. This heats up the water until all of the water in the water heater is at the temperature setting on the thermostat. When this happens, the thermostat shuts off the gas supply and the burner stops.

In most areas, gas is cheaper to run than electric. Gas also heats up quicker after you use the hot water.
