Anytime you are in a confined space, there should be some way for fresh air to enter the area. All gas heaters have a flue pipe that extends from the top of the water heater through the roof, to remove the carbon monoxide, a by-product of the combustible gas used to heat the water. I would get another monitor, just to be on the safe side. Good luck to you!

if there is a window in the garage open it up some to allow fresh air into the garage and just throw an extra comforter on the bed. the fresh air will take care of any possible carbon monoxide

As long as the flue pipe is open and the damper is working the heater should be O.K. if not, it would go out.

Most water heaters have an oxygen depleation sensor on them. What this does is when the pilot is lit the pilot flame is touching a thermocouple. This is fail safe. When the room is starving for oxygen the piolt flame will rise in search of oxygen thus leave the thermocouple. The thermocouple generates millivolts that keep the gas valve open. The instant the flame leaves the thermocouple, it stops generating millivolts thus shutting off the gas. This is something that cannot fail since flames ALWAYS rise in search of oxygen and the valve cannot stay open without millivolts so sleep good.

I would recommend two things. Take the vent apart and make sure it is clean and unobstructed. Get a new CO detector.
If the vent is in proper order there is no danger and if you have a working CO detector you are insured there is no danger.
