My Hot Water Heater Is Making A Popping Noise. Kind Of Like The Creaking Of A House That Is Setteling. ?

Any idea what’s wrong or how urgent this is? It happens when there is no water running in the house. I’m not doing laundry or dishes at the time. No one is showering. It will even happen in the morning sometimes when the water hasn’t been on for hours.

It is probably caused by sediment in the bottom of the water heater. If the unit is fairly new you may try to open the drain valve on the bottom and flush out the sediment. If it an older one and hasn’t been flushed on a regular basis you may want to think about replacing it.

You are just hearing the water being heated similar to the sound you hear when a pot of water is almost coming to a boil you can see little bubbles appearing and you can hear a slight ” roar” its the same thing.
Water next to the element is boiling and then cooling off as it moves away from the convection currents in the tank.
As the water in the tank cools, the heater will come back on every few hours to maintain the temperature of the water. This is the basis of the claims that the tankless type is more efficient because it only heats the water while it is being used.

First off,,,, It is not a “hot” water heater. It is a “water” heater.
You are simply hearing the creaking of the tank in the process of heating the cold water. An influx of cold water in colder climates can have this effect on the heating elements.
