My Water Heater Is Making Popcorn Sounds?

Is it normal for my water heater to be making this kind of sounds?
The water heater is a “Alliance” kind and its approximately 22 years old. On the exterior of the water heater there is calcium & soap scum build -up around it.
What do you suggest on what option should i do about the popcorn sound?
Do you recommend a water heater replacement?
OR
Do you recommend for an expert to come by my apartment and try to repair it?
I am very confused!
Thank You for your best advice answer.

You correctly observed – the deposits tell you that inside where the water you use comes from is just as bad.
You are wasting energy to heat up the deposits and then the water. The deposits absorb so much of the energy, your bill is high.
Get a new one. It is about time. 22 years is a long time. Nowadays good high energy efficient water heaters have come into the market. Get a professional to install it properly.
You may also consider the :”on-demand” water heaters. They do not heat up and keep it stored like the conventional ones. They deliver nice piping hot water whenever you turn on the faucet. It is the way to go. It takes up very little room in the basement. It is just the size of a bread box. Hangs up on the wall.

I can’t believe the answers here, but this is the internet so…
the sound is caused by debris build up “percolating” while the heater is heating the water.
being that it is 22 yrs old, you may have problems draining the tank.
the drain valve generally will not allow the larger particles to pass so an attempt on your part may be rather futile.
i generally remove the drain valve and install a 3/4″ pipe with a full port valve and flush accordingly.
unless you feel confident about replacing the drain valve, i’d leave it alone. should the rumbling get too obnoxious, then change the water heater.

You need to flush out the tank. the pooping sound is the sediment that has collected on the bottom of the water heaters tank.
There will be a drain valve on the bottom of the water heater tank. open this up ( Connect a hose and route the water to a drain ) and let it run for 10 minutes. this will help clear this but, you should be doing this once a month.

What kills water heaters is mineral sludge collecting at the bottom and forming a corrosive chemical bath. There is a valve at the bottom of the water heater. Drain it until the water is running clear (run a hose to a floor drain or bucket).
That’s one old water heater. You are probably wasting energy and when it fails it will probably flood. If you have an expert come over, you should probably just have him replace it.

sounds like your therostats arent working properly thi could be very dangerous turn the power off to the heater. they can explode if overheating, and causing the water to turn to steam. if you have hard water, chances are your pop off valve is stuck shut and cannot open to relieve the pressure. i have seen pictures of h.w. heaters that exploded thet can do a lot of damage and quite possibly kill you.

The calcium and soap scum is probably your answer.Have you ever flushed it out? you know how? if not hook up a hose and open the valve and drain it ,your going to see a lot of calcium ,sand looking stuff come out.It may be too late if you haven’t done for 22 years.
    Good Luck

IF AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT,just about one time or another all hot water heaters make that sound,i really don’t know what causes it but mine does it all the time and it still puts hot water in the faucets so i don’t bother it,22 years old,you got your money out of it,or someone has
