Normal Vs Power Vent Water Heater?
There are two type of gas water heaters sold in the home centers. One of these types has electrical power vent. They normally cost $150 more, and they are warranty for 6 years instead of 12 years.
I prefered a longer lasting water heater, to reduce land fill.
Can I replace a power vented gas water heater with a non-power vented unit ?

Yes you can replace a powervent water heater with a non powervent water heater, BUT you CANNOT use the same exhaust system. A powervent can use a pvc pipe for exhaust ventilation due to the fan keeping the temperature safe. A non powervent would burn or melt the pvc causing a fire and/or release dangerous carbon monoxide into the home. If you are not 100% sure of how to change a powervent to a non powervent water heater- DON’T TRY!

ruralfam’s answer is right
- but I’ll add more for you. Power vented are better becasue they usually have safety features that shut the unit down if Carbon Monoxide problems and they usually use less energy than non-powered units. However they require an electrical connection.
The best water heaters are Direct-vent models such as those by Bosch, Rinnai, AO Smith and Bradford White. Installation of all combustion devices, gas or oil is best left to Pros.
One way to make your water heater last longer is to replace the anode rod every 3 years.

I guess ur talking about heater that has a damper at the top of the exhaust flu.If thats it the damper opens when the tstat calls for heat. Closes when tstat is satisfied. Its only there to keep heat in the tank longer. Also heater will not come on if it gets stuck in closed position. Have had hunderds of service calls for this problem.
