Pilot Light In Gas Water Heater Won’t Light?
This is a 3 or 4 year old Whirlpool water heater in a rental house. All the other gas appliances work. There is gas going to the regulator but the pilot light will not ignite. I’m pretty sure there is a spark with the ignitor. I’ve disconnected the 2 pipes going to and from the regulator. It looked like there was a little bit of a clay substance in the supply pipe where it terminates in the regulator. What could be wrong? Could the pipe for the pilot light be clogged or could the thermocouple be bad?

Most likely the thermocoupler needs replaced. If you are in a rental house get the landlord to fix it.

Chances are that the thermocouple has failed. An easy fix.

if my husband was here right now he could answer the question for you he is good at fixing and knowing what wrong with stuff like this .. but know my sisters was doing the same thing while back and he put a new thermocoupler on it and blew out the line somehow. and it worked ..

Are you holding down the main knob to let the gas get to the pilot light?

From your description, I gather the pilot is not a constant flame, but rather a spark ingntion oin demand. If you see a spark, but there is no ignition, no gas is getting to the pilot orfice. There could be several reasons for this. It’s impossible to figure it out over the internet!
If, on the other hand, it is a constant flame pilot, turn the control valve to the “PILOT” position and press and hold the pilot bypass button while you light the pilot. After 45 seconds or so, relase the bypass button. If the pilot extinguishes, you have a bad thermocouple.
Unless your rental agreemnet specifies that you are resposible for maintaining the appliances, I’d call the property manager or landlord.
