Sediments In Water Heater Making Popcorn Sounds When Heating. How Long Should Unit Last?
Our water heater is over 10 years old and plumber told me last year it wouldn”t last much longer. Now it is making popcorn sounds when heating. There are no leaks. It looks like it’s time to replace. I wanted to know if we have to do something in the next few days, or do we have a few weeks or months to select a replacement before it fails completely.
Draining the heater is not an option because the valve is broken and it would cost hundreds of dollars to replace it.

No one can answer with an exact date on when it will fail. They can at best give you a month or two estimate.
My advice – start shopping. Look at floor models that may be on clearance. I saved well over 40% on mine. It had signs of nicks from being rolled around, but the mechanical is perfectly fine.
Regarding your term “fails completely”. You don’t want any failure with water heaters. Leaks can cause all kinds of physical damage to your house. It also costs more money for the unit to continually heat new incoming water. Do yourself a favor and just replace it. It’ll do wonders for your peace of mind.
