To Buy Or Not To Buy – Tankless Water Heater?
I live in FL and need advice on tankless water heaters. We only have electric but I have heard you can back it up with propane? I have also heard lots of negatives regarding the tankless, but would like to go that way versus the tank for environmental and space-saving reasons.
Any advice/experiences with them? What is the best brand? How do you determine how big you need? We are a family of two adults and two little kids in a single family home. Thanks

First, if you have hard water or lots of minerals, don’t get a tankless. It will clog up quickly. I have not seen any units that are electric, with a gas back-up. Using gas requires a vent to be installed. Realize that many plumbers will install a tankless, but do not perform repairs on them since they are very high-tech. Rinnai is the brand I hear the best reports about. You will need to discuss the size you need when purchasing one. If you belong to an electric co-op, check with them about a new water heater that is very efficient and has a lifetime warranty.

A tankless unit will save you a lot of money. You can start at the water heater page at my source. You will find brand rankings there. Then you can check out the manufacturers site for sizing and to find a dealer.

I would not buy one yet, They have not worked the bug out of them. Wait a year or so.

I put i a 1/4 water line direct from the output of my water heater and when it was 36 degrees this morning i turned on the hot water valve in and hot water HOT,hot water was there in 2 seconds, but i think in the long run the instant heater is better,..or do what i did until you can afford one of these OVER PRICED machines.

Over the long haul the tankless system will be most cost effective. You will have more space and it doesn’t work until the demand is there. Why have a huge tank full of hot water that needs to be constantly reheated to stay at correct temp?
You can find the electric tankless systems as well as the n. gas or propane systems. I am thinking of going with the electric tankless in my home the next time my water heater screws up.
