Water Softener – New To Us, Came With New Home – How Do We Use It?

We just bought our house and moved in. It has a water softener. When we first moved in the water was really soft, and we liked it. Now, it does not seem to be as soft. We added salt (80 lb bag of pellets) and recharged it manually. (We do not have the manual for it) – how come the water isn’t as soft? Is there something else we should do or know about?

There are numerous problems that could be causing your softener not to work correctly. Plugged brine line, plugged injector, plugged drain line, or your may need new seals & spacers or even a new piston. First you need to find out what type of system you have. The attached page shows Fleck valve guides. You may not have one of these although the back of the manuals have troubleshooting hints. This should help you. Otherwise you should get some hardness test strips at Home Depot and test your own water to make sure it’s not working.http://www.virginpacificwater.com/servic…

you need to get the model number, name brand, and size of the softener tank. More so you need all the numbers on the softener so you can go to a major store or call a few to see if they carry it. Once you found one ask how you get the information you need as well as the best things to use in it so you can have that soft water again. Home Depot carries most brands so start there and they can get you all the information you need to have that soft water again. Mine was taken out before I moved into this place I am renting and boy do I wish I had one.

it might take some time for the salt to take effect…if you dont see a change in the water within a week…I would either add more salt or talk to a sales associate at like Menards, Ace, Lowe’s, or Home Depot (b/c they can recommend different salt to use or ways to remedy the problem)

Your probably just getting used to softened water. My in laws have it, and every time I shower there it feels weird. But when I stayed there for a month one time house sitting, I didn’t even notice it after a week.
