Water Softener, Which One Is Good, With Or Without Salt?
I’m thinking of putting in a water softener for my house. I notice there are many kinds. With salt, without salt, magnetic, electric, and so forth. Which type is the best, whats the best brand, and which one is best suitable for a house of 1200sqft with 4 people? Also, how much did you get yours for pre-installed?

The type of water softener you should get is directly related to the impurities you are trying to remove…salt filters do work well but are for removing solids from the water such as iron…salt filters will not remove odors..you need magnesium permangenate filter for this…so what you need to do is get a sample of your water take it to your health deptartment and find out what impurities are in it so you can make a better informed decision about what filter you need.. both of these filters use minimal electricity as only the timer uses electricity….both are adjustable for the amount of water you use and the number of times they regenerate or backwash per week..//the more water you use the more it will need to regenerate…

If you are looking for an engery efficient water softner, I highly suggest one that does not work of pure electricity. I personally bought a house with a water softner already installed. Now, I don’t know the prices of these softners first hand, but I do have first-hand knowledge of what works well efficiently. I have a water softner with salt. It’s just me and my husband and 2000 sq. feet. But, the sq. feet has nothing to do with it, just so you know, but the amount of people do. I have to refill the water softner with salt just about once every 6-8 weeks. It works by water pressure mostly…not electricity. The only electric it uses is for its timer. The timer rotates between cycles and I haven’t even seen a change in my electric bill. I have quite a number of friends and family members that have water softners that work off salt. They love it and have never complained about it. It’s very inexpensive–$5-$6 a bag that lasts 6-8 weeks. Obviously you will need a water softner that can keep up with 4 people’s water needs. But remember, your water heater also plays a BIG part, because once the water softner has cycled out the water, it will flow into your water heater. The softner will do what it can, but if your water heater does not hold enough water for 4 people per day, then the water softner will not work as properly and therefore outside water coming in will bypass the softner and go directly to the water heater. Hopefully someone will give you a better idea on the brands, but remember, don’t go too cheap if you do decide to buy, because that extra amount of money will save you big money in the long run. I use about 1/2 of everything what I used to before I had the water softner. When I bathe, I use 1/4 to 1/2 of soap and shampoo. Everything lathers up twice as much with half the amount. It also improves your drinking water! I always encourage people to do the water softner. Good luck!
