Water Softener?

So we have a water softener, it came with our house when we bought it. But my dad decided to turn it off or whatever cause he said it would damage our sewer or something like that. So me and my mom decided to turn it back on and just not tell him. But the problem is we have no idea how to do it.

A couple of things about the water softener. Most kinds require some kind of maintenance. Most kinds require periodic addition of salt. It isn’t a matter of just turning it on. However, to turn it on, it will have a switch somewhere and you will have to open valves (inlet and outlet usually). If it is “hard wired”, he may have turned it off with a breaker in the house’s breaker box.
His concern is probably about a septic system. A sewer system would not make any difference. The latest research on this indicates it’s ok to use a water softener with a septic system.
Salt type water softeners add sodium to the water. This can be problematic for people with blood pressure issues and generally, we get too much sodium in our diet anyway.
I think the best thing to do is level with your dad. Arm yourself with the facts. Here are two websites that will make you extremely well informed about the subject. If you present it in an informed and non emotional way, your dad will most likely be impressed and listen to you. Don’t expect him to say yes right at first. He will need a little time to think it over.
