Water is taken from a river ,lake or other water source and the large things are filtered out(fish, etc). The water is let settle, aluminum hydroxide or alum is added to help the minute particles settle. The water is taken through a very small pore filter. (large bacteria can be filtered out ). Water is sometimes aereated at some point to add air and kill germs. Chlorine is added to kill germs. Flourine is sometimes added to help prevent dental carries.Samples are taken to observe clarity and also plated to see what microoransms might be present. Any coliforms indicate more action is needed.
