What does it take to install a water softener outside?

I’m familiar with softeners in the basement, but our new house in AZ has no basement, and there’s a place on the side of the house where a pipe comes out of the ground, then back in. I’m told this is for a softener, but I don’t really understand how it would tolerate the elements, plus it has no place to drain. Do they make outdoor softeners?

    Hello Chick.
The fact is the best place for your softener is outside where it was.
Much easier to top up with salt and maintain.
Make a wooden cover for it and line the cover with polystyrene.
Pull the cover away when you want to get to it and push it back after.
    There is always a drain.
The previous people must have had a drain.
