This is a tricky question… my opinion is Culligan which is mid range on cost. I’ve had a Sears and Calgon brand as well. The Culligan cost about $1800 (uninstalled – I didn’t want to pay the $300).
These softeners are fairly all similar… differences are capacity and electronics. There are typically 2 tanks, one is a resin bed and the other is a salt regeneration module. The electronics are where most of your money goes so buy something geared toward your personal needs. I liked Culligan because it’s made in the U.S. with very solid parts and components. Heavy walled tank and a great industrial background. My Sears broke after about 14 months (faulty valve and uninsulated electric solenoid) and the calgon was too small. (I’m not 100% sure Calgon was the manufacturer… but the Tank said Calgon on the name plate).
Do a little research and determine your capacity needs. You don’t have to soften all the water going into your house. You can select or modify certain lines to be softened so you can control usage or waste better.

I just finished having a WATER-RIGHT Sanitizer Series installed in my home, finished price was $1800. I did a lot of research and looking; I stayed clear of Sears, Lowe’s and other Big Box Stores. The other contributor is right, CULLIGAN is a Big Name in the Industry. I spoke with one of their Reps and felt, let’s say uncomfortable about the when, where, etc’s – that led me to the one installed. I am not knocking the product, it was the messenger.
Water-Right is out of Appleton, WI. I found one of their distributor/installers not too far from my place. I called, they came right over and we had a great discussion and I felt comfortable with the answers. It was installed over a two day period and I have been completely satisfied. I just finished insulating the pipes and tanks for the winter – simple. Good luck.
