it depends on : how much hardness is in your water, how many folks live in your house and what kind of unit you have!

I have a Peerless water softener and it is set by the amount of gallons used between regeneration cycles. Mine is set for 900 gallons. The quality of your water determines this setting. If your water is hard all the time , your softener is not working or out of salt. If the softened water does not last long you need to shorten the cycle time. Say drop down 100 gallons..

You can get a sample of your water before the softener is set to regenerate and after. Have the samples tested to see the difference. You may need it to regenerate sooner or you may be doing it too often and wasting salt.

My water is extremely hard so I have to have mine regenerate after 800 gallons.
