What should be the average cost of having a hot water heater installed?

Home depot gave me a price of 828.00 of buying a water heater, having it delivered, installed and having the old one thrown away.

Could I get a better deal?

I’m assuming your talking about an electric unit. And that price is about right. But if it’s a 40 gl gas heater that’s to high. You can do better.

install it yourself, it ain’t rocket science. turn off the water supply to the unit. drain the old one. disconnect the water lines. rent a hand truck from home depot if you can’t lift it yourself. do the opposite to install the new one.

sell the old one to a scrap yard, the copper tubing in there is worth money!

You can do better by calling a plumber and having him do it, but probably not by a lot. Lowes does get their piece of the installation.

suggest that that does seem high. I just purchased a hot water heater from Home Depot for $272 and charged customer $175 for installing it .

It certainly would have helped us give you a more definitive answer if you would have mentioned what type and size of a water heater you were talking about. I do this for a living and an average installation of a new electric unit of 40 – 50 gal. size, without a lot of repiping is around $150-$190. Removing and disposing of the old unit is $45 extra. I’m in SW lower MI, so if there’s a big difference in labor rates where you are then you’ll have to factor that in, but the price they gave you, as the price our local Home Depot quotes my customers, seems quite high. If you’re talking about a power vented gas unit, then it’s about right. They are a very expensive unit to begin with. A standard gas unit would cost about $25 more than the electric to install here. I’d look around if I were you. If you should decide to do this yourself, the comment about the copper inside a water heater is incorrect, there’s not enough copper in a water heater to shake a stick at. The pressure relief valve is about it. Everything else is either steel, fiberglass or plastic.

You can probably do better calling a plumbing company. Home Depot actually takes a cut from the installation cost and the installation company takes one also. The actual installer gets the least amount. I know, I used to do plumbing installations for a company contracted by HD here in Atlanta.
