What Should I Know Before Buying A Used Hot Water Heater?

It’s a 55 gallon electric. Very clean, a little corrosion/rust around outside of in and out pipes. Don’t know how to judge the age. Energy rating is over $400. I can buy it for $50.

  1. This Old House Says:

The main thing to check is the condition of the anode rod, sometimes called a sacrificial anode. This is a replaceable magnesium or aluminum rod that sticks into the tank and gradually corrodes in a process that prevents corrosion in other parts of the tank. Rods can last about 5 years or so, depending on your water quality. If the rod on this tank has completely corroded away, there may be corrosion damage to other parts of the tank. Replacing the anode rod is a DIY project:http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/skill-bu…

Sounds like you can’t go wrong there. I would just keep and eye on the hydro bill for a few months to make sure it isn’t eating more hydro than it should be.

Don’t buy a used water heater. The life is only about 7 years.
