Why Does My Hot Water Heater Make A Noise That Sounds Like Water Is Running?
I noticed the sound this morning when I thought I hadn’t turned off the water all the way. The water was off but the water heater sounds like water is running in it. There is nothing draining in the floor.

water heater’s can make a boiling sound when the temperature drops below a certain temperature, if this is what’s happening then when it achieves it’ upper temperature setting then it will stop. another case scenario is that the pressure relief valve is hanging open. this will be a brass screwed in fitting usually on the top or the side of the tank with a 3/4″ pipe running from it down the side toward the floor which if properly installed will drain under the house or back into a drain so that there is no evidence of leakage, when it is making this noise then locate the 3/4″ pipe and see if the temperature is hot. I f it is then if you know what you’re doing then turn off the water making sure the heater element is disabled, either by breaker of gas turnoff which ever is applicable, drain the tank down by drain at bottom of tank with Length of garden hose, then remove drain tube from popoff valve, unscrew popoff valve, then take it to the hardware store and replace with popoff valve of same temperature rating then reverse procedure to reinstall. One more thing that you can check before starting all this is to turn off all water faucets, then check your water meter and see if the indicator on the meter face is turning or not. if you are not a do it yourselfer then the last is the best and safest procedure. good luck and i hope this helps

PERFECTLY NORMAL, ITS KINDA THE SAME SOUND THE OLD TEA KETTLES ON THE STOVE MAKE, JUST THE WATER MOVING AND BUBBLING AS IT HEATS UP.

That heating chamber where gas combustion takes place is rattling against the upper thru tube that connects onto the vent.
Remove that door from the bottom and inspect that area and you will find the rattle. That rattle occurs when heat is applied to the lower chamber plate as combustion takes place.
On really old water heaters, rust from that tube that connects to the vent will fall down in the chamber and rattle when the heat comes on.
Remove that cover plate from lower bottom and inspect that inside of the chamber with a good light. Vacuum it out good.

It could be water running into it or the noise of the burner heating up the water.

Are you sure it’s not your water softener…if you have one.

What you hear is exactly what you say it is.Water is running into the hot water heater.If you ever stop hearing this sound you will be out of hot water.Perfectly normal
